A new, more economical and sustainable material is designed that uses sunlight to decontaminate the air

The Chemical Institute for Energy and the Environment (IQUEMA) has designed a new compound to remove harmful nitrogen oxides from the air.

This new compound uses magnesium and aluminum which can convert up to 65% of nitrogen oxides using visible light.

Unlike other photocatalytic reactions that only work with ultraviolet light, this new compound achieves similar results using visible light, making better use of sun’s abundant energy.

The development of this new photocatalytic material is an important step towards the large-scale development of a system for sustainable decontamination of air.
