Quiz on Science & Sustainability

Here is a fun quiz to learn about the relation between Science and Sustainability

1 / 4

Q. 1 What percentage of water (approximately) is present in a human body?

Answer Detail: Approximately 65% of human body is made up of water. Water is contained in the tissues, the blood, the bones and elsewhere. If we don’t drink enough water, we may become dehydrated. Therefore, it is important to drink clean and sufficient quantities of water every day, and also ensure that others have access to clean drinking water at all times.

Did you know: in the year 2020, two billion people lived without safely managed drinking water services, including 1.2 billion people lacking even a basic level of service. (Source: UN)

As we reach out to and support more and more people in getting access to clean water, it will help us achieve SDG 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), target # 6.4, that is: “By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.”

Q. 2 Which is the tallest tree in the world?

Answer Detail: Coast Redwood trees in California, USA, are the tallest plants in the world. They can grow more than 320 feet high!

Did you know: Trees help keep our air clean, removing carbon dioxide and mitigating the harmful effects of climate change. Old-growth redwoods store as much as 5 times more carbon aboveground than any other type of forest on the planet, which helps clean the air we breathe.

Many such wonders are present on our planet Earth.
It is, therefore, upon us, to preserve our nature so that we and our future generations can breathe clean and fresh air. When we focus on planting more trees and preserving nature, it will help us achieve SDG 15 (Life on Land), target # 15.2, that is, “By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.”

Q. 3 Which metal can be recycled forever?

Answer Detail: Aluminum can be recycled forever! Unlike paper which has a limit as to the times it can be recycled.

Did you know: Recycling a can made of aluminum produces enough energy to run a television for three hours.

By recycling aluminum, we are not only reducing waste but also generating a source of energy without any harmful effects on our planet. Let us make everyone aware of this which in turn will help us achieve SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), target # 7.3, that is, “By 2030, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.”

Q. 4 Which human-made material has the longest life?

Answer Detail: We use glass every day in our lives just as plastics. When left untreated, plastic can take thousands of years to decompose while nylon takes up to 30-40 years to decompose.
Glass, on the other hand, when left by itself, may take up to 1 million years to decompose in the environment.

However, unlike plastic and nylon, we can fully recycle glass without harming its quality and quantity and use it for thousands of years. The process of recycling glass requires less energy than the process of recycling plastic and nylon. In fact, recycling glass consumes lesser energy than making fresh glass products from melting fresh raw materials. Glass containers are not usually treated with chemicals for durability which makes them excellent for the recycling process.

If we all switch to recycled glass products and stop using plastic and nylon products, it will help us achieve SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), target # 12.5, that is, “By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.”
